How to Grow Flower Seeds in Pots and on Balconies
A balcony of blooms from seed
You don’t need a garden to grow flowers from seed — pots on a balcony or windowsill work beautifully. With the right setup, you can enjoy colourful blooms in any small space. Here’s how.
Choose the right pots
Use pots or planters with good drainage holes, sized to your flowers. Shallow pots suit small annuals; deeper ones suit larger plants. Add a saucer to protect your balcony floor.
Use a good potting mix
Fill pots with a light, rich potting/seed-starting mix — not heavy garden soil, which compacts and drains poorly in containers. Good mix means strong germination and healthy plants.
Pick balcony-friendly flowers
- Petunia & portulaca — masses of colour in small pots.
- Marigold & zinnia — easy, cheerful, and hardy.
- Nasturtium — trailing colour, great for railings.
- Cosmos — pretty and low-effort.
Sow and keep moist
Sow at the right depth, water gently, and keep the mix consistently moist until seeds sprout. Container soil dries faster, so check it often — especially in summer.
Give them sun
Most flowers need good light to bloom. Place pots where they get plenty of sun, and turn them now and then so plants grow evenly.
Grow vertically
Use hanging pots, railing planters, and tiered stands to grow more flowers in a small space — and add trailing varieties for cascading colour.
Feed and deadhead
Once growing, feed lightly during the blooming season, and remove faded flowers to encourage more. A little care keeps your balcony blooming for months.
