Why Your Flower Seeds Aren’t Blooming (and How to Fix It)
No flowers? Here’s why
It’s frustrating to grow plants from seed and get leaves but no blooms — or nothing at all. Usually it’s down to a few common causes, most easily fixed. Here’s what to check.
Poor germination from old seed
The cause: old or low-quality seed barely sprouts. The fix: start with fresh, high-germination seed from a reliable source.
Not enough sunlight
The cause: most flowers need plenty of sun to bloom; in shade they grow leggy with few flowers. The fix: grow sun-loving flowers in a bright spot (6+ hours of sun).
Too much nitrogen
The cause: over-feeding with high-nitrogen fertiliser gives lush leaves but few flowers. The fix: use a balanced or bloom-boosting (higher phosphorus) feed once plants are growing.
Wrong sowing time
The cause: sown in the wrong season, plants struggle to flower. The fix: sow each variety at its recommended time for your climate.
Overcrowding
The cause: crowded seedlings compete and stay weak. The fix: thin seedlings and space plants so each has room to grow and bloom.
Not deadheading
The cause: leaving spent flowers on can slow new blooms. The fix: remove faded flowers (deadhead) to encourage more.
Just needs patience
The cause: some flowers take time to mature before blooming. The fix: give them proper light, water, and care, and the blooms will come.
